40: TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE FALLEN

Early Saturday morning at the movies seems to be the way forward - hardly anyone goes! Or maybe it's because no one goes to the Cineworld in Staples Corner. Why put a cinema in the middle of a business park? Weird. Take note Cineworld: there's a perfectly empty Bingo Hall on Kilburn High Road waiting to rise up again as a new cinema!

This is such a confusing movie - the plot is incomprehensible and the action scenes are impossible to follow. Round of applause if you can follow who's who where and when in this movie. The effects are good but the Transformers themselves are overly detailed and complex to the point I couldn't see where their heads were half the time. Lines are corny, acting wooden and the writers have a frustrating habit of changing the rules in order to move the plot forward. I mean, when did Transformers start disguising themselves as people a la Terminator? Disappointing.

39: YEAR ONE

A switch to comedy at the Trocadero in the last weekend of June; always a risky move. Comedy, that is; not the Trocadero.

Should be called "Laugh One". Up to you to spot where the laugh comes from. Actually, don't bother.

38: LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

The second of a double bill at Cineworld Chelsea, seen in a large auditorium like cinema with a steep incline and grandstand type seats, sparsely attended by about ten people.

A slow paced, creepy study of the relationship between boy and pale faced, bloodsucking vampire-girl with an underlying theme of friendship and (very young) love. The final scene in the school's swimming pool expresses these themes in a most powerful way. A unique experience.

37: FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING

It was time to check out Cineworld Chelsea, one of the London venues I hadn't visited yet. I went for a double bill, making up Numbers 37 and 38 of the 100 Free Movies In TWO Years list!

A harrowing tale of an informer working against the IRA during The Troubles; brutal, intense and Ben Kingsley has a funny accent. The real life informer, Martin McGartland, distanced himself from the movie, but, if not authentic, this movie certainly does pack a punch.

36: THE DAMNED UNITED

I had just finished reading the brilliant book by David Peace when this one came out, so I decided to give it a shot.

One in the back of the net in my opinion: Michael Sheen is captivating to watch portraying Brian Clough as a funny, yet troubled man. Fast paced and entertaining, but, and I'm sorry to fall into cliche here, it isn't as good as the book. That said, given that the book was considered unfilmable, it's a pretty good effort.

35: TERMINATOR: SALVATION

Time to leave movies seen in the distant past behind for a moment, travel into the future to arrive at the present - Saturday morning to be precise. Confused? Also, first movie at Staples Corner, in the bowels of a retail park.

Bale broods, Worthington simmers and the Terminators kick ass. Entertaining, cool action sequences and a well realised Terminated future. Better than Term 3 if not the others. McG steps up a notch as a director. A point taken off for the totally frustrating plot point reveal in the trailers - ruined half the movie. May reinstate point if second viewing deems more satisfying.

34: LAKEVIEW TERRACE

Still catching up; this one seen in Feb, I think - I do remember there not being much else on at the time.

Reasonably interesting outing with good performances by all; Samuel L doing "angry" like only he knows how. Not satisfying enough for my liking though.
